In Sri Lanka, where poverty and risks of violence persist among children in tea plantation communities, we partnered with a local NGO to launch the Mother & Child Plantation Programme. Through this initiative, we support infrastructure and empower teachers with early childhood education training to actively identify child protection issues. This enables working parents to send their children to childcare centres without worry. Adolescents are encouraged to voice concerns like school dropout rates.

14-year-old Dila and other children at the Children’s Club participate in local community dramas, raising awareness about the challenges they face. The club provides a safe space for Dila to excel academically and enjoy performing. Teachers assist with effective time management and selfcare routines, fostering Dila’s overall growth.

Dila said with a glowing smile, “We discussed the stories we want to act out, and our teachers encouraged each of us to participate. I am not at all shy, and I truly enjoy performing.”

By fostering collaboration among government officials, teachers, parents, children, and tea company representatives, we amplify children’s voices. This programme cultivates a culture of child safeguarding within the communities, ensuring a brighter future for children and granting them access to the quality education they deserve.
