Every November 20 is World Children’s Day to raise awareness of the rights of children around the world. The World Children’s Day Fun Carnival Opening Ceremony, hosted by Save the Children Hong Kong, is held at the West Kowloon Cultural District on 19 November. In order to raise the public awareness to children’s mental health and the power of art, Save the Children Hong Kong launches a series of parent-child activities in the West Kowloon Cultural District with the theme of HeARTS. Minds. Reimagine.

At the opening ceremony, Michelle Siu, the first visually impaired vocalist in Hong Kong and one of the Top Ten Outstanding Young Persons, performed “You raise me up”. In the welcoming remarks, Ms. Carol Szeto, CEO of Save the Children Hong Kong said, “During the past three years of the COVID-19 pandemic, children in Hong Kong and around the world have not only had their education disturbed, but also their psychosocial and mental health.” She expressed, “Furthermore, the future of many children has been threatened by the largest global food crisis in decades. This year, we are hosting World Children’s Day Fun Carnival with the goal of inspiring children and giving them hope for a healthier and brighter future. We are launching a series of activities to raise public awareness of children’s mental health.”

As the guest of honour of the event, the renowned actress Karena Lam shared her experience of integrating art into parent-child education. “Arts can transcend the language and allow children of any age to express their emotions. I enjoy making art with my daughters, like painting and handicrafts. I encourage parents to take time to accompany their children to create art together. In the process, everyone can unwind from their busy lives, parents can also get to know about their children’s thoughts and feelings. Parents and children can be more intimate with each other.” Karena continued to share,”I am glad to be part of this meaningful event. Both children and adults can unwind over the weekend at Save the Children Hong Kong’s World Children’s Day Carnival.”

In order to raise awareness of the global food crisis and the risk of acute severe malnutrition (SAM) experienced by children in Africa and spreading to other part of the world, the carnival also featured the winning artworks of the “SAM Children’s Drawing Competition.” It is a great honour to have invited celebrity model Qi Qi to be the competition’s special judge and award presenting guest. The winning children explained how they draw a brighter and healthier future for SAM, a little bear who just got out of hunger, hoping to cheer for children in need  around the world through their artworks.

In addition to the World Children’s Day Carnival, Save the Children Hong Kong has also launched different workshops and a two-week charity market at Lee Tung Street this year, continuing to bring a joyful parent-child activity to everyone.

About World Children’s Day

November 20 is World Children’s Day, the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, first drafted by Eglantyne Jebb, the founder of Save the Children. This year, we will celebrate with our Save with LOVE campaign to nurture the hearts of children and say no to verbal abuse.  For more details, please visit:  https://worldchildrensday.savethechildren.org.hk/
