A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake has ripped through western Colombia, causing significant damage across the Pacific Region, with tremors felt as far as Venezuela. This is the strongest earthquake to hit the country in a decade.

So far, at least 176 people have been reported killed, including children, and over 2,503 people have been injured, although figures are likely to keep climbing. Approximately 1.9 million people live in the area considered most affected by the earthquake.

SAVE THE CHILDREN’S RESPONSE

Save the Children has been working in Colombia since 1985, our teams and partners are providing:
· Water, Sanitation and Hygiene: Distribution of hygiene kits, safe drinking water, and household water filters to ensure access to clean water.
· Health and Nutrition: Nutritional screening for children up to 6 months old, triage and referral of critical cases to the health system;
· Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS): Dedicated services for children and caregivers affected by the emergency;
· Education in Emergencies: Establishment of temporary learning spaces for children in affected communities;
· Cash and Food Assistance: Multi-purpose cash transfers and the distribution of food kits to help families meet their immediate needs.
