Across Asia, severe natural disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes and floods have struck in quick succession, leaving families without homes and basic necessities. Funded by the Disaster Relief Fund, Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Save the Children Hong Kong responded swiftly to meet the most urgent needs of affected children and their families in Vietnam, Myanmar and Nepal. We provided educational materials, winter supplies, temporary shelter, essential household and hygiene items — helping families maintain their health and dignity after disasters, and enabling children to return to school and everyday life as soon as possible.
Vietnam: Super Typhoon Yagi Hits
Super Typhoon Yagi hit Vietnam, and floodwaters submerged the home of 6-year-old Dung and his family. For a time, they were left without food, electricity or communication.
After receiving educational and winter supplies from Save the Children, Dung said: “My school bag was soaked in mud and couldn’t be used anymore. I’m very happy to have a new school bag, books, pens, a jacket and blankets. Now I can go to school like my classmates.”
Myanmar: M7.7 Earthquake Destroyed Homes
A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake destroyed Ma’s new home in Mandalay, leaving the 37-year-old and her family without a home or belongings. The family of seven, including her 10-month-old son and her mother with limited mobility, could only take shelter in a basic tent, often exposed to wind and rain.
Save the Children provided Ma and her family with temporary shelter, hygiene supplies and essential household items to ease their most urgent needs, helping displaced families maintain their daily life, health and dignity.
Nepal: Heavy Rain Triggered Flooding And Frequent Landslides
Heavy rain triggered flooding and frequent landslides across parts of Nepal, severely damaging the cowshed, vegetable garden and surrounding area of 13-year-old Samiksha’s family and blocking her route to school. With limited learning supplies at home, Samiksha was unable to continue her studies.
Save the Children provided Samiksha with learning materials, including notebooks, drawing books, a lunch box and a water bottle, so she could continue her education. “I’m very happy to receive these supplies so I can continue my studies,” she said.
