Monsoon rains, tropical storms, and cyclones have triggered devastating floods and landslides across Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam, affecting more than 10 million people. As of 6 December, the total death toll has soared past 1,700, according to multiple news reports.
“Children have lost everything – their homes and their belongings – and they are out of school. Some children are stressed. Others are living in overcrowded shelters with their families raising, again, child protection concerns,” said our Humanitarian Director in Indonesia.
Across the affected countries, we are:
-
Distributing essential relief items to families who have lost their households and all their belongings;
-
Providing cash and voucher assistance to severely affected households to cover urgent needs, including food, medicine, temporary shelter materials;
-
Providing back-to-school kits and essential learning materials to ensure children can continue learning; and
-
Supporting access to safe water through temporary water supply solutions, and water trucking where needed.
