Save the Children Hong Kong’s  ‘Generation Hope 2024’ programme successfully concluded with its capstone event, ‘TriR Tailor’, held on 31 May at The Mills, Tsuen Wan. Initiated by their Youth Climate Ambassadors, the event attracted enthusiastic public participation through a series of upcycling workshops for old clothes, an eco-market, and themed exhibitions. It successfully promoted the concept of sustainable fashion to the public and showcased the creativity, commitment, and action of the younger generation in tackling climate change. This event not only marked the success of the ‘TriR Tailor’ initiative but also demonstrated the achievements of the entire ‘Generation Hope 2024’ programme in empowering young people.

Children Bear the Brunt of Escalating Climate Crisis

Children are among the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Natural disasters resulting from climate change can disrupt children’s education through school closures, displace families, widen socioeconomic inequalities, and pose direct threats to children’s lives, safety and health.  Only with a safe and sustainable climate can young generations thrive and create a brighter tomorrow. Inspired by this belief, Youth Climate Ambassadors developed the ‘TriR Tailor’ initiative during a design thinking workshop uder ‘Generation Hope 2024’. Their goal was to challenge the culture of overconsumption driven by fast fashion and promote a more sustainable approach to clothing. The initiative features a series of upcycling workshops, co-hosted with social enterprises, where participants learned to create practical items from fabric scraps and transform old clothes using basic sewing techniques. The eco-market, exhibition, and interactive zones deepened public understanding of sustainable fashion and climate change, while encouraging dialogue and idea-sharing.

Entirely youth-led—from concept to execution—the event embodied the core values of Generation Hope: empowering young people to turn environmental awareness into meaningful action.

The TriR Tailor Team explaining the event concept to participants

Youth Voice: Turning Awareness into Action for Impact

The Youth Climate Ambassadors of Generation Hope demonstrated their passion and commitment to environmental protection through hands-on action. Youth Climate Ambassador Lily shared, “I’ve been passionate about sustainability since I was young, believing that fashion shouldn’t come at the cost of waste. Through this programme, I’ve dedicated myself to promoting the concept of a ‘circular economy’   — giving clothes a second life through upcycling, donation, or swapping. I hope more people will embrace slow fashion.”

Youth Climate Ambassador Tina shared, “Climate change affects us all. As a member of this planet, I want to do my part—starting with small changes in daily life to protect the Earth and create a livable future for the next generation.”

Youth Climate Ambassador Angel added, ” I love animals and nature. They help me appreciate the beauty of the natural world. I hope future generations will also have the chance to experience this wonder.”

Alice, another ambassador, also reflected, ” I joined Generation Hope because I care about social and global issues—especially climate change, which is becoming increasingly urgent. I wanted to show that young people can make a difference. Our project offers simple, practical ways to live more sustainably and protect the planet together.”

Youth Leading the Way: Save the Children’s Ongoing Commitment

Launched in 2022, Save the Children’s Generation Hope programme, through experiential activities and workshops, engaged 200 local secondary students, encouraging them to become advocates for climate justice. 14 Youth Climate Ambassadors were selected to represent Hong Kong at the United Nations Environment Programme’s SEA of Solutions 2024 conference, amplifying youth voices on the global stage.

‘TriR Tailor’ served as a showcase of the programme’s impact—providing a platform for young people to turn innovative ideas into action. It also highlighted their passion, insight, and leadership, proving that youth are a powerful force for change.

Ms. Kalina Tsang, CEO of Save the Children Hong Kong, stated, “We believe young people are key to driving social progress and tackling climate change. This is a global issue, and we are committed to empowering Hong Kong’s youth—not only by equipping them with knowledge and skills, but by ensuring their voices are heard and their ideas embraced. We will continue to support them in building a sustainable future through innovation and action.”
