One in four children in Hong Kong live below the poverty line, limiting their opportunities to reach their potential, according to the Poverty Situation Report 2020. Our Spark of Life Programme, launched in 2021, ensures the most deprived and underprivileged children’s well-being, education, and safety, empowering them to achieve their full potential.

Our Impact

Since the launch of the programme, we have conducted 176 programme activities, benefiting 823 children and 329 adults in Sham Shui Po and Yau Tsim Mong districts.

Who We Serve

Our programme serves children and caregivers in the districts of Sham Shui Po and Yau Tsim Mong, which have the highest number of subdivided flats.

According to the 2021 Population Census, there were approximately 108,200 subdivided units (SDUs) in Hong Kong, increased by around 17% in 2016. These SDUs accommodated 107,400 households and 215,700 persons. Almost 16% of the proportion is aged below 15. District Council districts with the most SDUs were the Yau Tsim Mong (26,300) and Sham Shui Po (22,400) districts.

Objective

Children living in subdivided units face insufficient space and limited resources, primarily constrained by financial limitations within their families. By providing them with opportunities to play, socialise, learn, and express themselves, our Spark of Life programme is designed to help children achieve the following objectives:

Children are raised in a safe and nurturing family environment with positive parent-child relationships.

Children’s mental health and wellbeing are improved through enhanced social-emotional skills.

Children and youth are empowered with the skills and opportunities needed for future success.

It was a rare opportunity for me to do handicrafts with my grandmother. I wished that my mother could participate in the workshop as well. I would like to join other future activities.
