Despite the lack of understanding of proper child-rearing methods, many grandparents in Cambodia are stepping in to care for young children on behalf of working parents. Save the Children Hong Kong supported the “Grandparents, Parents, and Communities Join Forces to Give Young Children a Healthy Start in Life (GRAND)” project. Introduced in Kampong Cham province, it provides caregivers with valuable information and skills in childcare and development.

Him Pha, a 56-year-old grandfather, previously employed harsh disciplinary methods and neglected his one-year-old grandson, Sopharith’s basic needs. After participating in the sessions, he learned effective communication, empathy towards his grandchild’s emotions, positive discipline techniques, and strengthened their relationship.

Him Pha said,“ Back then, I didn’t understand anything about proper parenting methods. I let Sopharith play on the ground and gave him snacks and sweet drinks. When he was sick, I asked his parents to take him to the hospital. Now that I’ve learned proper ways to care for him, we are closer than ever. He is growing healthier and happier. I am so happy. “

Sopharith now receives love and proper care from his grandfather, including well-cooked and nutritious meals, quality playtime, and engaging activities that promote cognitive and social development.

This project aims to enhance early childhood development by improving parenting skills, emphasising the crucial role of male caregivers, and equipping caregivers with knowledge about child protection and development.
