Although Bhutan is often celebrated as the happiest country on earth, many worker and farmer families struggle with incidents of family violence and abuse against children. Our Safe Families initiative addresses this challenge by providing parents with tools for positive discipline and non-violent communication to strengthen family relationships.
From Commands to Connection
Ugyen, a farmer and father of two, used to communicate with his children primarily through commands. It was only after participating in the training that he learned the importance of respect and active listening. He shared, “I used to order my children to do things for me and use harsh words to them, but I unintentionally created distance between us. That wasn’t right.” Now, Ugyen works with his son through open dialogue and helps his daughter to set phone usage rules, restoring balance in their studies and personal lives.
Home and School Unite to Build Safety Nets for Children’s Secure Growth
The initiative works alongside schools to promote child protection, emotional resilience, and positive communication. A school principal noted that the programme has strengthened cooperation between families and schools, and encouraged students to identify and inform safety issues to school.
Parents like Ugyen are rethinking their roles and empowering their children. “My son dreams of becoming a doctor,” Ugyen beamed, “and I’m helping him explore scholarship options.” With small yet meaningful changes, we are collectively weaving a safer and more supportive environment for the children of Bhutan.
